Bhubaneswar: Several medicine stores in the city were sealed by the authorities of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday. Sources said that the medicine stores closed for violating social distancing and other COVID-19 guidelines.

“The shops have been closed for violation of lockdown measures and directives issued for COVID-19 management as per the provisions of Section 51 to 60 of the Disaster Management Act 2005, the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897, section 188 of IPC and other legal provisions,” said BMC officials.

It is pertinent to mention here that local administrations across Odisha are stressing on strict adherence to COVID-19 guidelines including wearing of masks and maintaining social distance to stay protected from coronavirus infection.

However, such guidelines are being flouted by people as well as several business establishments in Bhubaneswar and other parts of the State.

On June 12, BMC had temporarily closed Unit-2 market in a major crackdown against COVID-19 norm violation. The decision to seal the market building was taken following a huge turnout of shoppers ahead of the Raja festival.

Earlier on May 12, a joint squad of BMC and Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) had also shut several shops selling non-essential items for violating social distancing norms.

Meanwhile, the Enforcement squad of BMC-BDA, Health Officials and Commissionerate Police continue to conduct surprise checks at hospitals/clinics and other places to ensure strict compliance of COVID-19 norms.
